Reasons for Mulching:

  • Inhibits Weeds - When spread around plants, mulch inhibits weeds by blocking their access to sunlight, thus encouraging a better growing environment.
  • Conserves Water - When applied 2"-3" deep, mulch helps reduce evaporation for  soil, keeping valuable moisture in the ground for plants to use. This means watering less often.
  • Prevents Erosion - Mulch helps hold soil in place during heavy rains, thus avoiding root damage caused by soil erosion.
  • Promotes Healthier Plants - In hot weather, mulch acts as an effective insulator to keep roots cool, thereby promoting healthier plants.
  • Adds Nutrients - Mulch adds beneficial humus to soil. As each season passes, the bottom layer of mulch decays and adds nutrients to the soil.
  • Encourages Earthworms -  Earthworms are commonly found where mulch is used, creating healthier soil. Earthworms aerate the soil allowing the plants to absorb nutrients more easily and increase the amount of organic material available to the plants.

The ideal times to Mulch:

Spring - Mulch around new plantings of annuals, perennials, and bulb beds

Summer - Mulch around flowers, covering all bare soil. A minimum depth of 2" is recommended. For more positive weed suppression, use

          up to 4" depth.

Fall - For winter protection of bulb beds and perennials, spread a 2"-4" layer of mulch in the late fall, after the ground has frozen or after

          several hard frosts.

  • Protects plants from frost heaves
  • Keeps plants dormant
  • Avoids freezing and thawing of the root system
  • Retards emergence of perennials and bulbs long enough to safeguard from early spring frosts
  • Prevents premature opening of buds

Sand and Gravel:

  • Mason Sand - Fine sand used by masons to make mortar. Mason sand is the choice for mortar because of its fine consistency. This consistency enables masons to mix a very tight mix for jointing block and bricks. While concrete sand would be too coarse, because it contains larger aggregate. Also can be used to sweep into the joints of pavers as jointing sand, but not as bedding sand because of its fine consistency.

       Sold by: Ton, or Bag

  • Concrete Sand - Coarse sand, sometimes angular, that is used primarily in the process of mixing cement and also as a bedding coarse for pavers and retaining walls

       Sold by: Ton, or Bag

  • Stone Dust - A sharp angular aggregate mixed with very fine dust. Stone dust compacts very well and therefore is an excellent choice for sub-base material. However, because of the excess of fines it does not pass water with ease, very poor drainage. Stone dust can be used as a sub base under pavers, but should NEVER be used underneath pavers and retaining walls as a bedding layer.

  • Sand Pea Mix - Sand pea mix is a mixture of 3/8" stone and concrete sand mixed at a 2:1 ratio. Sand pea mix is a main ingredient in the concrete production process. *Currently this product is only sold at the Rehoboth location.

  • 3/4 " Process Gravel - Crushed bank, dense grade, crusher run. A manufactured gravel made with sand and crushed 3/4" aggregate. Excellent drainage and excellent compaction makes it the perfect choice for base material in paving applications.

        Sold by: Ton

  • 1" Recycle Gravel - Manufactured gravel made with crushed asphalt, concrete, brick, and gravel. Recycle compacts very well thus, it is an excellent choice for road base. Recycle should not be used under pavers, as it tends to retain moisture.
    Sold by: Ton
  • Screened Loam - As loam is excavated from the earth and stockpiled, J & J Materials will screen the loam to specific sizes typically 1/2" in size. This process involves running the materials through a processing plant (screener). The screen will sift  the loam to a set screen size. This will produce a screened loam free of rocks, sticks, roots, and debris. This by product is called tailings and often sold inexpensively to contractors for fill.
    • Screened to 1/2"
    • Mixed with compost for added organic content
    • Sold by the yard
