SEED: There are major categories of grass seed that we deal with in New England;
- Kentucky Bluegrass
- Ryegrass
- Fescue
Kentucky Bluegrass - Very well known and very popular in the northeast because of its attractive growth habit, and its ability to tolerate cold New England weather. It has the ability to recover from damage quickly because of its wide spread rhizome root system.
- Germinates in 18-21 days
- Hardy in cold weather
- Great disease resistance
- Darker color
Ryegrass - Fast germinating, inexpensive coarse texture, lighter in color and dies out after one to three years or with the very first frost.
- Fast germinating
- Coarse texture
- Thins out and dies after 1-3 years
- Germinates in 5-7 days
- Available in Annual Rye, Perennial Rye, Turf Type Perennial
Fescue - Fescue is broken down into 2 classes, fine fescue and tall fescue. Both are common and widely used for commercial applications. They are very tolerant to shade and respond well to high traffic situations, and respond very well to drought situations.
- Common in commercial mixes
- Drought tolerant
- Good color
- Good in high traffic areas
- Shade tolerant
- Germinates in 14-18 days
- Available in Creeping Red, Chewing, and Turf Type
The finer the Fescue within the mix the less traffic tolerance it has. A tall fescue will have the best tolerance.
Contractors Mix - An inexpensive fast germinating seed that will usually only last 1 year. Contractors mix is generally used when a job requires quick results. Generally not the best quality.
- 80% Annual Ryegrass
- 10% Kentucky Bluegrass
- 10% Creeping Red Fescue
Pro-Landscape Mix - Excellent value for the money, Pro-landscape is one of the more popular seeds as it responds well to both sun and shade areas. Pro-landscape also contains a perennial so it will continue to flourish throughout the years.
- 33% Perennial Ryegrass
- 33% Kentucky Bluegrass
- 34% Creeping Red Fescue
Trilogy Mix- An ultra-premium three way rye mix.
- 34% Perennial Ryegrass
- 33% Cruiser Perennial Rye Grass
- 33% Stallion Supreme
URI #2 - A very fine seed that also responds well in both sun and shade. U.R.I. was formulated at the University of Rhode Island and specifically designed for the New England climate.
- 40% Creeping Red Fescue
- 20% Goldrush Kentucky Bluegrass
- 20% Kentucky Bluegrass
- 20% Majesty Perennial Ryegrass
Master Mix - An excellent overall mix for general purpose. Has some quick growing properties, works best in full sun. This mix does contain annual ryegrass which will only germinate for one season.
- 45% Creeping Red Fescue
- 25% Kentucky Bluegrass
- 15% Perennial Ryegrass
- 15% Annual Ryegrass
Shady Mix - A more expensive mix that is used in extreme shady areas, or in areas of partial sun.
- 30% Chewing Fescue
- 25% Perennial Ryegrass
- 20% Hard Fescue
- 20% Red Fescue
- 5% Kentucky Bluegrass
Hydro-Seeding Mulch - Profile's Thermally Refined wood fibers maximize coverage and performance. Their processing technology produces fibers that hold 50% more water than competitive wood fiber products. Atmospherically refined wood fiber simply doesn't provide as much coverage per bag as the eco line.
- EcoBlend is a combination of cellulose and premium wood fiber that absorbs water rapidly, forming a homogeneous slurry
- EcoBlend combines 30% cellulose fiber that ensures flexibility in pumping and spraying, while 70& wood fiber enhances turf coverage
- Delivers up to 15% greater coverage versus competitive blend products - an economical choice in blend products
- Provides greater yield and better loft compared to 100% cellulose
- Non-toxic and environmentally safe
- Maximum slope length of 23 feet
- EcoBlend functional longevity is equal or greater than 3 months

Fertilizer is made up of 3 components indicated by 3 numbers, (example22-2-5). These numbers represent the percentage of nitrogen being the 22, phosphorous being the 2, and potassium being the 5. These 3 ingredients are the makeup of all fertilizers.
- Nitrogen - This is the most important ingredient for lawns; nitrogen promotes rapid plant growth and gives the lawn a hearty color.
- Phosphorous - This stimulates the formation of roots and strengthens the growth of the root system.
- Potassium - This strengthens the grass; helps prevent disease, and better withstand traffic.
The following is a list of definitions that will aid in the understanding of fertilizing and lawn care.
General terms:
- Starter - A mild fertilizer that can be used on both new lawns and gardens. This fertilizer will normally have 3 chemical numbers that are either the same or have a lower first number and higher second and third numbers.
- Pre-Emergent - Stops seeds from sprouting and becoming mature plants. A pre-emergent will act as a preventative control for crabgrass and other weeds. HOWEVER, it will not control existing weeds.
- Post-Emergent - This will eliminate an existing problem usually in reference to broadleaf weeds, which are any non-blade (non-grass) weed. Examples: Dandelions, clover, violets, spurge, oxalis, and cinquefoil.
- Control - This will eliminate an existing problem (example: grubs, moss, & fungus), but does not prevent an occurrence or reoccurrence of a problem.
- Preventative - This will prevent a problem from happening (example: crabgrass & insects), but it does not stop an already existing condition.
- SCU/XCU - Sulfur Coated Area, a slow release coating used on the nitrogen prills to create a slow release effect of the nitrogen. Thus giving the grass a longer feeding of nitrogen.
- (pH) - pH means the potential for hydrogen. We use it in a scale from 1 to 14, (1 being very acidic and 14 being very alkaline) to measure the acidity and alkalinity in soils. Turf thrives at a (pH) of 6-7 most shrubs and ornamentals thrive at a (pH) of 3-5. A (pH) of 5 is neutral. The (pH) can be adjusted by applying a pelletized or powdered line product.
Chemicals added to Fertilizers:
- Dimension - A pre-emergent and post-emergent control for crabgrass and some early spring weeds. Dimension will work as a post-emergent if applied at the earliest signs of crabgrass.
- Pendimethalin - A pre-emergent crabgrass control that must be applied early in the spring to work to its fullest. Will not work once crabgrass has sprouted through the soil.
- Trimec - A milder form of broad leaf weed control for lawns.
- Millennium - A very good broad leaf weed control that is strong enough to handle even the hardiest types of weeds such as clovers
- Dylox - An existing grub control. Works as a poison, the grub feed on it and die. Best applied in the late summer / fall or at the early on site of grub damage
- Merit - An excellent grub preventative. Basically merit works by attaching a sour taste to the root system of the grass plant. The grub cannot tolerate the taste and die from starvation
